Tool Kit Text 1

Gallon Man is a visual representation of the conversion units for volume. There are many visual representations of the correlation of cups to pints, pints to quarts, and quarts to gallons, but Gallon Man is more appealing to middle grade students because of the cartoon super hero depiction. This representation is helpful for struggling readers because it gives them a concrete illustration of how the various units of measure for volume relate to each other. For example, there are two cups in a pint, and within each “P”, there are two “c”s, thus indicating that the relationship between pints and cups. A quart is represented by a “Q”. Within each “Q”, there are two “P”s, and four “c”s, indicating that there are two pints or four cups in a quart. From Gallon Man, one can see how any of the four units of measure for volume relate to each other. Gallon Man is so helpful, I even have a picture of him on my refrigerator to help when I’m adjusting recipes while cooking or baking.
