Strategy 6: K-W-L

Strategy 6: K-W-L (Beers, 2003)

K- What I Know

W- What I Want to learn

L- What I Learned

This strategy first accesses student’s prior knowledge about a topic by having them list what they already know about that topic. Second, by having the students think about what they want to learn, they are inadvertently making connections between the new material and their previous experiences. Finally, the students are prompted to reflect on their learning by listing what they learned from the lesson/unit. All these activities help make the material more meaningful to the student and enable them to draw connections between what they learn in the classroom and how they will use it outside the classroom.
